In recent years, many consumers have asked us questions about portable air conditioners. Consumers seem to like the idea of having a small and mobile air conditioner but they often wonder are portable air conditioners effective. We’ve found that the best portable air conditioner brand units available today are inexpensive, energy efficient, and good at cooling.

The best air conditioners portable units come in a variety of sizes, ranging from 5000 BTUs to 18000 BTUS. BTU is actually the abbreviation for British Thermal Units. The higher the BTU of a unit is, the cooler the air it provides, as they will be more powerful. The best air conditioner portable units tend to cost more to operate. To determine the BTU required to cool a room, the square footage of the room needs to be multiplied by the number thirty five.

The EER or Energy Efficiency Ratio is the amount of energy that is consumed by a unit. Those units with a high EER utilize less power and result in savings on your utility bills. The normal range for EER numbers is between 8.2 and 10.5.

Click the link above to see our comparison of the different EER ratings for the top portable air conditioner brand units.

There is extreme competitiveness in the market, with Sharp, LG, Friedrich, and Whynter emerging as the leading brands. Increasing AC Performance by Cleaning Your Condenser – EricTheCarGuy

Increasing AC performance by cleaning your condenser was a surprise to me. My friend and forum moderator Paul Krawsek aka College man, turned me onto this. He works in HVAC and was telling me about the benefits of cleaning condenser coils. He says one of the biggest reasons that AC systems fail is due to increased head pressure in the compressor. Higher pressures equal more heat. The increased heat breaks down the lubricant. Once that happens, it’s not long before the compressor fails. One way to keep down compressor temperature is to lower high side pressures in the AC system. You can do this by increasing the condensers efficiency by cleaning it. Honestly, I was amazed at the result. This really works and doesn’t require that you open the AC system at all to do it. So if your AC isn’t working as good as it should, you might try this process to see if it helps.

Tips To Reduce Electricity Consumption of an Air Conditioner

A few Tips to reduce AC electricity consumption:

1) Ideal Temperature

In an air conditioner, higher the temperature that you set, lower is the electricity consumption. We have seen that 25 degree celsius is an ideal temp for both cooling comfort and electricity savings. If you set the temp lesser than 25, then your ac will consume more electricity.
Using ceiling fans helps to regulate the cooling of the ac throughout the room. However, if the roof of your house is directly facing the sun, then avoid using ceiling fans along with air conditioners.

2) Placement of outdoor unit

If the outdoor unit of your air conditioner is installed at a place where it gets a lot of heat from the sun or from other heat emitting appliances, then the cooling of the ac will be reduced. Also make sure that the outdoor unit is not placed in a cluttered space for maximising its output.

3) Insulation

Air conditioners are meant to cool enclosed spaces. So it is very important that the heat entering the room through the walls, ceilings and windows should be minimised. For doing that, you can white-paint the roof of your house, or use thermal insulation for the ceiling. Thermal insulating wallpaper can also be used for the walls of the room. Keeping the doors and windows closed and using curtains will help in insulation.

4) Maintenance

Clean the filters of the ac before start of the season as unclean filters block the air inflow. Also make sure that you don’t miss out on the Annual Maintenance Contract

How to Properly Use The Air Conditioner (AC) in Your Camper | Pete’s RV Quick Tips (CC)

Resident RV Expert Randy Murray displays proper use of the air conditioning unit found in most campers.

Randy gives a quick important lesson teaching us that air conditioners work by removing warm air and moisture from around the room, which then gets vented outside leaving the room cooler.

In order to make sure your AC is running properly, Randy shows us how to remove and check the air filter to make sure there isn’t a buildup of dirt and dust hindering performance. Making sure the fan is on will increase efficiently with the AC system, as well as making sure that all doors, windows, and shades are closed to prevent heat from working its way back inside the camper.

Randy advises turning on the AC when temperatures are cooler (typically early morning) for optimal air flow and a cooler camper throughout the day. By using the quick cool option to restrict airflow from the ducts, the AC can effectively cool the room faster and when it reaches a temperature to your liking, airflow can be redirected back through the vents for everyone to enjoy.
