Forgiveness is a complicated thing. It can mean different things to different people. Forgive and forget. To completely erase something from your mind. As though it never happened. And that’s possible, sometimes. The small things are easy to let go.

But then there are the big things. When forgetting is not necessarily possible. I would argue that sometimes it’s not even wise to forget.

If forgetting leaves you open for attack, if it places you in a situation similar to the one that hurt you in the first place, is it really best?

Is it possible to let go of the pain and the hurt, without letting go of the lesson?
Or if you can still remember the lesson, if you still remember that you WERE hurt, that there WAS pain, have you not fulfilled the forgiveness side of the equation?

It can take me a really long time but things I never thought I could forgive I have forgiven but not forgotten, the hurt is all but gone.
