Winter didn’t exactly arrive in stealth mode this year.
Two weeks ago, I was sending Miss Question off to school in a thick sweatshirt. This week, Old Man Winter dumped an ungodly amount of snow in our yard. Which then drifted into piles roughly the size of a toddler. No, seriously, I wouldn’t let Truck play on the big one, because I was afraid I would lose him.
We weren’t the only ones grumbling about the sudden influx of snow and cold, though. The vehicles balked, too.
The car is literally unable to get out of the driveway. The drift is up past the bumper. And I’m not about to dig it out. That’s not a big deal, because we tend not to drive it on winter roads anyway.
The Jeep refused to start. No, scratch that. It would start, it would then bitch, moan and shut off. It was not interested in idling out there in the cold.
So TheMan decided that? Was not okay. It must be fixed. So he hops in the other truck, which is only two wheel drive, in order to get the needed items to make the Jeep behave.
In the two-wheel drive truck. In the unplowed driveway. (Because we can’t go borrow the plow if none of the vehicles will make it out. Oh, the irony.)
So, with lots of spinning of the wheels and revving of the engine, he makes it halfway down the driveway. We break out the four-wheeler and a rope. We get him to the end of the driveway. At which point, not only is the truck stuck, but we also have to make it over the snow pile at the end of the driveway. See, we live on a road that is very well plowed. And every time the plow goes past, it builds the snow drift at the end of the driveway. We actually gave up and got a PO Box last year, because every time we’d shovel out the mailbox, the plow would go by and bury it again.
So now I have the kitty litter, two shovels and the four-wheeler out there. It took another 15 minutes to get that stupid truck out of my driveway. Thank god the kids were napping, or I’m sure the house would have been destroyed.
Total trip time before he came back with the stuff needed to fix the 4-wheel-drive Jeep? 30 minutes. It took longer than that to get out of the driveway!
But at least the Jeep is working now.
Which is more than I can say for the truck, which died today, in the middle of intersection, naturally. That was an adventure, towing it home via a chain in the dead of winter. I’ll save that for another post.

ok, the snow drift bonus at the end of the driveway would send me over the edge. having limited coping skills in addition to never having never lived in a snowy climate makes it tough for me to discern if it is a small price to pay for well paved roads. you're a champ. great post. stay warm.

I remember those days of shoveling snow at 5:00 in the morning and prepping your car for the winter months. Hated it! We had to move to get away from the cold.

My car did that tonight before Hardworking Hubby went to WalMart. It would start, run, shut off for him. Then I went out there and I think she is scared shitless of me because she started right up and kept on purring!

Oh how I HATED the damn snow plow piling up all the snow at the end of our drive and covering our mailbox!
One year hubs had to go to Cali for work (why we ended up moving here) and needed out trailer to stay in. It was on the side yard behind a snow pile. He was positive he could get it out with his 4-wheel Suburban. In the end it all got stuck, took him and 4 neighbors an hour to get it out and when it finally gave??? The trailer slammed into the side of the house on its way out and put a hole in our siding. Sigh. Good times.

Oh girl, I feel your pain.
I still have to go out and try to see if my truck will start again today after leaving it plugged in over night. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Some days it’s tempting to move somewhere warmer if only for the fact you wouldn’t have to dig, plow, pull, and call for a boost several times each winter.
